The original plan was to install solar panels on the barn, located approximately 250 feet from the main house. However, after careful analysis, the barn was deemed unsuitable for the solar array due to structural concerns. This led to a creative pivot: a low-profile ground-mounted array was installed 350 feet from the house in a nearby field, tucked out of sight.
To further ensure the system's discretion, the tilt of the panels was adjusted to 20 degrees—10 degrees lower than the standard 30-degree angle typically used. This adjustment reduced the visibility of the array while maintaining its efficiency, creating a solution that blended functionality with visual appeal.
Connecting the ground-mounted solar array to the home required running electrical lines across 350 feet of the property. Traditional trenching was not an option due to its potential to disrupt the landscape and damage recently installed brick pavers on the patio. To address this, directional boring was utilized—a technique that allowed pipes to be installed underground without disturbing the surface. This method preserved the integrity of the property while ensuring a clean and efficient installation.
Another potential challenge was shading caused by tall grass and brush near the array, which could impact its performance over time. To mitigate this, commercial-grade ground cover was installed at no additional cost to the client. This proactive measure not only ensured optimal system performance but also made long-term maintenance easier. The ground cover was strategically placed around the front and east side of the array, minimizing vegetation growth and enhancing the overall aesthetic.
